I am unexpectedly good at the needlework thing.

Since coming to Japan, three women I'm close with here (all Japanese) have fallen pregnant. This is wonderful news, for both Japan's steadily decreasing birth rate and for me - I love babies and pregnant women and baby clothes and shopping with pregnant women for baby clothes. And I love giving presents and playing games, so thank fully does my neighbour and one of my closest friends here in Japan, Natalie. So, a few months ago we decided we would hold a baby shower for two of our pregnant friends ('cos Yumiko is in Tokyo) and so last month, at the end of October we held Rumi and Yoshimi's baby shower in Nat's apartment, complete with homemade paper chains, stupid purple decorative lanterns that would not stay attached to the roof, prizes from the 100 yen shop (including notebooks which spouted the wisdom I have included as the title for today's blog) and baby food with all sorts of delicious flavours - creamed cod and vegetables anyone? We invited all of the girls we're close with here, headed to Mount Cafe (just by our apartment and a favourite cos they sell Matua Valley wine, VB beer (a rarity in Japan but for some reason in a tiny cafe near our place in Juso) and delicious food. The owners are also fabulous people with beautiful dogs that sleep behind the counter. Cute. So we started with dinner then headed back to Nat's for dessert and games and gifts. It was wild playing all the party games Nat had planned (Guess the baby food, Guess the birth date, who's that famous baby?, guess the tummy size, etc) and lots of fun just spending time with all the fabulous women I've met here. Yoshimi's cousin Yoshika did an amazing job of guessing both Rumi and Yoshimi's waist size (while poor Nat did terribly and very much undersized them!) and the gifts the women were given were just adorable. Made a few of us a bit clucky I think.....
